Adventure, Excitement, and Relaxation are some of the first words that come to mind when describing the shorefront communities of the Eastern U.P.
Most people are aware that Mackinac Island is one of the top tourist destinations in the U.S., but what many fail to realize is that the real treasure of the Mackinac Straits are the Les Cheneaux Islands and the surrounding mainland waterfront.
As a 20-year resident of the area, I have had the pleasure of experiencing many of the things that make this region incredibly special. When you cross the Mackinac Bridge, you're not just physically in a new environment...you enter a different mindset as well. Time slows down a bit and you are reminded of what is most meaningful in life.
The sense of adventure and conquering new horizons seems like an elemental part of this community. Whether you are sailing or boating, hiking or fishing, there is a feeling that you can experience the unexpected on any given day. No matter how often you have cruised the many bays and channels around the island archipelago, or explored the gorgeous boreal forests making up our inland environment, our residents find excitement in learning and seeing new things, even if you have been coming up for decades.
Perhaps this is because of the vastness of Lake Huron and the Hiawatha National Forest. In a place like this, there are always new experiences waiting to be discovered on both the land and water. When you consider everything this area has to offer, it's easy to see why a summer cottage is such a cherished commodity. The traditions and pastimes that are handed down through generations during the summer months are many times the most lasting memories you create as a family.
And best of all, after you have enjoyed another day to its fullest, you can sit and relax next to the bonfire and truly relish the time spent in this authentic and unforgettable place.
